Jena, Germany - October 10, 2006 - Intershop Communications AG is staging the Intershop Open, Eastern Germany's biggest e-commerce conference, which begins today. The event is being held for the fourth time. From October 10 to 11, Intershop is welcoming 215 guests from around the world to Jena, Thuringia's main technology hub. The two-day conference in the Intershop Tower began this morning with a welcome address from Birgit Diezel, Deputy Minister President and Finance Minister of Thuringia.
Opening the conference, Diezel stressed the importance of the e-commerce industry to Jena: "E-commerce holds huge promise for the future. With 25 million customers shopping online, it is not only a fast growing market, but also a highly dynamic one. The proven innovative ability of Thuringia's small and mid-sized companies is a prime reason why the region is one of the three most innovative in Germany."
The highlight of the conference, which continues tomorrow, is this evening's gala reception at Jena City Hall, hosted jointly by Intershop and the Mayor of Jena, Dr. Albrecht Schröter.
Tomorrow, the second day of the conference will begin with Paul Jackson, principal analyst with Forrester Research, presenting the results of a survey entitled "Europe's E-Commerce Forecast 2006 to 2011," which includes key information on the Web as a retail market. Andreas Hofmann, Director, Sun Product Marketing at Sun Microsystems, will then give a keynote speech on "Multi-Channel, Multi-Venue E-Commerce for a Global Fortune 500 Company," outlining how SUN Microsystems became a global e-commerce company.
Attracting growing recognition and an increasing number of attendees, the conference is aimed at Intershop customers and partners, as well as experts and other interested parties from the e-commerce industry. The Intershop Open events have gained a reputation as a forum for the young, dynamic, innovative e-commerce market.
