From ERP to E-Commerce

Bunzl is a leading global supplier of packaging products and consumables. In Europe alone, it has some 60 distribution centers across twelve different countries, supplying over 100,000 products—including all types of food packaging, disposables, and consumables as well as cleaning and safety products. Bunzl’s customers include retailers, hotels, restaurants, caterers, construction companies, and health service providers.

The company’s previous shop platform, used by five national subsidiaries, was based on multiple ERP systems and Microsoft SharePoint—which limited the potential for future growth. Since introducing Intershop 7, Bunzl has been able to roll out new stores quickly and easily all around the world, including a new B2B web shop for Bunzl Australasia.

Challenge

  • Before moving to Intershop, Bunzl’s five European subsidiaries had online stores based on a number of different ERP systems and a Microsoft SharePoint solution.
  • Given the difficulty of scaling these stores and adding new channels, Bunzl required a new platform to support omnichannel B2B commerce.
  • Other Bunzl subsidiaries—in Australia, for example—also recognized the need for centrally managed and mobile-optimized B2B and B2C stores.

Solution

  • Migration to Intershop Commerce Management 7 provided a scalable platform that enables fast and easy roll-out of new stores in multiple languages, currencies, and brand identities.
  • Integration of Microsoft Dynamics AX ERP system based on web services, dynamic cache, and import/export function.
  • Intershop Product Information Management (PIM)—for collecting, managing, and sharing high-quality product data—plus fully integrated Solr search that is optimized for high search volumes.
