Decision-Making Support for Online Sellers – Intershop Takes Part in Major Research Project

  • Complex causal relationships within e-commerce explored
  • Objective is development of tools for store managers
  • Joint research project involving the Institute of Applied Informatics e.V., Leipzig, and the University of Jena

Jena, Germany, February 1, 2011 – For online sellers, assessing the impact of business and technical decisions in complex e-commerce environments represents a crucial challenge. Since the multiple causal relationships involved have far-reaching implications for business-critical KPIs, such as sales and costs, making the fast decisions typically required is fraught with danger. A recently launched research project called SimProgno will examine this problem and explore potential solutions for simulating the impact of decisions. The project is receiving funding from Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research until 2012 as part of the IKT2020 research support program.

The aim of SimProgno is to identify and quantify causal relationships within e-commerce, thereby enabling simulation of decisions in terms of their impact on relevant KPIs. Store managers would gain the ability to “test drive” their decisions in advance and make alternative choices if appropriate. The additional security will be of particular benefit to small and mid-sized businesses with limited online experience and high profitability requirements.

The project partners on the academic side are the Service Science and Technology research group of the Institute of Applied Informatics e.V. (InfAI) and the Chair of Software Technology at the University of Jena. As the business application partner, Intershop Communications AG is contributing its extensive e-commerce and project development experience.
