Enfinity- Intershop launches new software generation

New York, October 4, 1999 – Intershop Communications AG, one of the world’s leading provider of sell-side electronic commerce software, today announced its next generation ecommerce software, INTERSHOP enfinity, to an audience of more than 1,300 at its first annual Intershop Open E-Commerce Summit in New York.

INTERSHOP enfinity is the first complete XML and Java™ platform-based, sell-side ebusiness application that offers the enterprise market advanced selling features, closely integrated with existing business systems, while providing the flexibility to grow with rapidly changing e-commerce business models. By using the latest Java and XML technologies which allows independence from existing hardware and software systems as well as by its industrywide unique product features INTERSHOP enfinity is the first software that enables customers with advanced e-business needs to sell their products anywhere, integrate everything, today and tomorrow. With supporting XML which has emerged as a standard for exchanging supplier content and transaction information between buyers and suppliers, INTERSHOP enfinity enables enterprises to sell anywhere in aggregated marketplaces such as CommerceOne’s MarketSite.net, the Ariba Network™ eCommerce platform and SAP’s mySAP.com that represent the next generation of Internet trade. “By using CBL 2.0 for ecommerce document exchange, Intershop is playing a significant role in linking buyers and suppliers across the Global Trading Web,” said Chuck Donchess, vice president, marketing and business development for Commerce One. “Intershop’s sell-side technology is helping make business-to-business e-commerce as seamless and easy as consumer e-commerce.” These Sell Anywhere capabilities include e-commerce by wireless appliances through Wireless Application Protocol, selling on remote, affiliate, and portal sites, and machine-tomachine transactions.

Intershop has developed a unique pipeline concept to model business flows. Composed of multiple pipelets, or subtasks, a pipeline manages a discrete business flow such as taking an order. Most e-commerce software applications come with a single pipeline that is used to take an order. These “stovepipe” systems do not allow an enterprise to add new capabilities or even modify existing functionality without extensive and expensive professional services engagements. In contrast, INTERSHOP enfinity comes with more than 75 built-in business pipelines, enabling the creation and modification of a wide variety of business processes. The Visual Pipeline Manager allows an enterprise to modify existing business pipelines or add new ones. This includes business flows within the INTERSHOP enfinity system and among existing systems such as ERP, inventory, or customer relationship management.

Because the INTERSHOP enfinity system includes an application with pre-configured pipelines for different business scenarios, it is designed for rapid deployment today, yet still allows room for growth tomorrow. Built entirely with Java and XML, two of the leading standards-based technologies for the Internet and e-commerce, INTERSHOP enfinity is a highly modular, object-oriented, and extensible platform with a robust development environment. INTERSHOP enfinity is an e-commerce system comprised of four major components – The Transactivity Server, The Catalog Sever, The Application Server (PowerTier for EJB licensed from Persistence) and the Management Center. These components are supported by the Database Object Cache and relational database layers. With INTERSHOP enfinity Intershop enters the high-end enterprise market. Pricing is dependent on component bundles and ranges from $150,000 to more than $300,000 for a full-use license.

INTERSHOP enfinity’s open architecture includes a Cartridge API allowing systems integrators and ISVs to easily extend the functionality by integrating best-of-breed, third party software and services. Cartridges currently under development include integrations with ERP, content management and personalization, payment and fulfillment, and customer relationship management software.

Intershop Communications today announced also the participation of leading e-commerce solution providers in the early adopter program for Intershop enfinity. Among the top corporations adopting Intershop enfinity are KPMG, debis IT Services, Keane, Infopark, JBA, Nuforia, Nvision, InTouch, Pixelpark, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Unisys.
